Mini Mabel Chicken Comb Mod

Want to try something new with your Mini Mabels? This mod will give your little crochet chickens a fun new look! I’ll show you a new way to close the body and swap the original fuzzy, fur yarn top for a blanket yarn comb. You’ll want to make these little ones in every color!

About the Pattern

If you’re not already familiar with the Mabel Chicken series of crochet patterns you can read all about them in this Crochet Chicken Pattern Roundup. In short, there are three sizes available – the original Mabel Chicken, which is the middle size, and a Mama and Mini Mabel Chicken pattern which are the larger and smaller versions. This FREE Hatching Carrot pattern might be one of my favourites! Both Mini Mabel and Ittie Beattie Bunny fit inside perfectly! It’s a perfect quick make for Easter baskets and spring markets!

NOTE:

  • The original Mabel Chicken patterns recommend using an 8mm crochet hook, although I use a 7mm for this post. Either will work, but be sure to use the same hook size throughout the pattern for consistency.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Let’s add Mini Mabel’s Comb together! Jump to the video tutorial HERE.

Closing the Back:

1: As written in the original Mini Mabel pattern, begin to close the body with your yarn needle part way to add beak, eyes and stuffing.

2: Using the yarn tail and your crochet hook, yarn over to work a single crochet stitch into the first stitch on top of the head. Insert your hook into the next space to complete a second single crochet stitch. FO and weave in end.

3: Fasten off and weave in ends.

Adding the Comb:

The comb will be worked into the 2 single crochet stitches on top of the head.

1: Using comb colored blanket yarn, place a slip knot to your hook.

2: Insert hook into the first stitch on top of the head, yarn over and complete a single crochet stitch.

3: Insert hook into the second stitch and work 2 half double crochet stitches.

4: Fasten off and weave in ends.
