Mabel has been a well-loved crochet pattern among our crochet community. It’s been a favorite for kids and chicken lovers, it has served as a great place to start for beginners, and it’s perfect for those looking for quick market makes.

Many of you expressed your interest in accessories, or “Mabel mods”. I’ve been working diligently behind the scenes to bring some fun ideas to life, and I thought I would start by creating a cozy little nest for her…so here it is! And the best part – three tiny Minis can snuggle in there perfectly! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

SUPPLIES:

Supplies for crochet project- Soft brown Bernat brand yarn, a crochet hook, scissors, a yarn needle and stitch marker.

NOTES:

  • Use a stitch marker at the start of each round for placement.
  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join rounds or turn your work.
  • I recommend matching the brand/weight of yarn used for the nest to your Mabel Chicken. This will ensure a snug fit and a more consistent look.
  • You can use a different weight of yarn for this pattern, adjusting to the appropriate hook size, but the size of the finished product will be different.
  • Increase stitch (inc) – 2 sc in the same st

ABBREVIATIONS:

mc – magic circle

st(s) – stitch(es)

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

inc – 2 sc in the same st

dc – double crochet

FO – fasten off

BLO – back loop only

NEST INSTRUCTIONS:

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: inc around (12)

Round 3: inc around (24)

Round 4: (2 sc, inc) x 8 (32)

Round 5: sc in BLO around (32)

Rounds 6-7: sc around (2 rounds) (32)

Round 8: (dc, sl st) x16 (32)

Cut yarn, and pull through, leaving an 8” tail for the INVISIBLE FINISH step.

INVISIBLE FINISH:

After completing the final round, the optional ‘invisible finish’ (sometimes called invisible fasten off) step creates a seamless transition between the last and first stitches.

1: With a yarn needle, bring finishing tail through top loops of the second st of the final round, from front to back.
